JTS Brown: Two Day Workshop Intensive with Nick Armstrong

$90.00 | 1 class

This two-day intensive is designed to give you a basic understanding of the “form” known as "J.T.S. Brown". "J.T.S. Brown" is one of the most artistic and abstract forms in improv. We use the word “form” loosely as it’s not so much a form and more a philosophy of play. It was designed for a large cast (10-17 people), to involve as many players as possible at a time, to have a higher level of theatricality and polish than a typical improv show, and to encourage any move to be made at any time, with the idea that anything that happened was the perfect thing to happen. There isn’t a set structure and it’s infused with some short-form style moves.

More can be read about the JTS Brown here: https://wiki.improvresourcecenter.com/index.php?title=J.T.S._Brown

Music Improv Workshop! with Rick & Laura Hall

$40.00 | 1 class

Saturday, September 29th 12pm-3pm, $40.00 Location: Curious Comedy Theater

Have you always wondered, “How do they improvise the songs on “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” If so then join with “Whose Line's” musical director Laura Hall, and veteran Second City improviser Rick Hall for an Intro to Music Improv Workshop.

Laura & Rick have taught Music Improv all over the U.S. and Canada. They create a supportive, playful environment, starting with games and warm-ups to ease into singing.

Even if you've never done song improv before, you'll build vocal confidence and learn to listen to each other and the accompaniment. And if you're already experienced with song improv, we'll stretch your skills and help you explore all sorts of fun new ways to use music. Before you know it, you'll be belting out your own great improvised songs!

Here is some of the material we'll cover:
1. Warming up and why it’s important; the care and use of your voice.
2. Building vocal confidence: exploring melody, rhythm, discovering your natural voice, ways to help if you’re not an experienced singer.
3. Finding your own way of approaching a musical accompaniment, and your own take on the subject matter.
4. Music improv as a natural extension of scenic work: exploring character, location, story, etc. to create rich and interesting songs.
5. Ensemble singing: Listening, watching, taking turns, coming to a chorus, intro to harmony singing.
6. Rhyming exercises and games such as Irish Drinking Song and Hoedown.

Here's what people who've taken our workshops have to say:

“I was blown away by how supportive and encouraging you both were. You've made me feel better about myself as an improviser as a whole, not just musical improv.”
- Heather D, Toronto, ON

“I had a great time and learned a bunch at the same time. You and Rick quickly put the class at ease and whamm-o we were singing like champs!” - Andy R. Aurora, IL

“What a great teaching team! Within the first two hours we learned how to advance scenes with song; built confidence and had fun…lots of it.” – Gerry Orton, Monterey, CA

Looking at your scene partner and deciding right away that they’re the most important person in your character’s life is a great place to start from when thinking about “relationship” in improvisation. This workshop will help you make quick, specific choices about how well you know the other person so the audience understands why these characters are together. We’ll explore different “types” of relationships we’ve often seen in improv and discover new options to explore these characters in a dynamic way.

Carla Cackowski is an improviser, writer, podcaster, and nap-lover. She toured all over Europe, Alaska, and the Caribbean performing comedy with The Second City. Carla hosts "Improv Yak", a shop-talk podcast about improv comedy.
