As you probably already know 2011 has been a HUGE year for Curious Comedy. We thought we would take a moment between wrapping presents and getting the fruitcake out of our hair to take stock…

In 2011 we:

-Hired two new staff members.
-Started paying our performers.
-Held our first ever and extremely successful Funnyraiser.
-Were awarded a grant from the Oregon Arts Commission.
-Brought special guests UCB and WeirdAss to Curious Comedy, selling out shows and bringing great national comedy to local audiences.
-Expanded our Training Center to include Skill Building and Intensive classes in addition to our regular semester length classes.
-Expanded our programming to include our New Memories Project, a partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association and The Vital Life Foundation to use improv to improve the quality of life of Alzheimer’s patients.
-Increased our listings and presence in Portland Media.
-Produced over 150 performances, taught over 95 classes and reached an audience of over 6,000 people.
-Whew!

And now we need your help…
We are trying to raise $10,000 by the end of the Year!

These funds will go toward meeting our budget goals for the end of the fiscal year, and will ensure that Curious Comedy is able to make all of our exciting plans for 2012 a reality.

Ticket Sales cover only 35% of our programming expenses.

Curious Comedy Theater will celebrate the beginning of its fourth year in Portland with a fundraiser to support its 2011-12 season. On Saturday, Nov. 19, the theater is hosting “Curious Comedy’s First Annual Fall Funnyraiser,” a night of improvisational comedy featuring the musical ensemble Pipes performing “Rhapsody!”, an improvised musical. The Curious Comedy Players, the theater’s resident company, will also perform.

“If you are a fan of Curious Comedy, and want to see comedy arts continue to grow and flourish in Portland, please come spend a fun evening with us,” said Stacey Hallal, Artistic Director and Founder. “Your generosity will support our 2012 programming and outreach and you’ll laugh a lot.”

A tax-deductible $35 donation includes a ticket for the performance and a three-course dinner. A $50 VIP ticket also includes reserved seating and entry to a 6:30-7:30 p.m. cocktail hour with our artists and esteemed guests. For a $275, a benefactor can become a Table Captain, which includes reserved seating for six, the VIP reception and two bottles of wine for the table. Tickets are available at www.curiouscomedy.org. Doors open for general admission at 7:30 p.m. for the 8 p.m. show.

We are changing our training and class structures this fall. We will be using a three level structure to ensure each student will have the opportunity to practice and master the skills taught in each level before moving up.  Level 1 will cover the fundamentals of improv, Level 2 will apply these in the context of performance formats, and Level 3 will be where students will form ensembles and perform regularly before becoming a part of the Curious Comedy Company.

Anyone can sign up for Level 1. But now, Level 2 and higher will require an audition which for the fall will take place Wednesday, September 7th with slots starting at 7:30pm. Please email Stacey at stacey@curiouscomedy.org to schedule your audition slot, if you have a conflict with that day/time, or with any questions. We believe auditioning for classes will help build auditioning skills, and ensure that all students are in the class that will both support and challenge their abilities.

Three groups of invigorated improv-ers—each equipped with a rotating cast of directors, tape runners, and actors—film a movie under the gun of a ticking timer and a live audience. Each team shoots three scenes based on a randomly selected genre (science fiction, melodrama, film noir, etc.) and intersperses the three-minute story lines immediately after completion. The ultimate goal is connecting nine mildly related scenes into one hot mess of a movie. Shy spectators need not apply as the project is fueled by audience participation culminating in a final scene shot on stage (and possibly at your table). The price of admission includes the opportunity to loan an object to the cast as an impromptu prop and watch as your personal possession is weaved into the fabric of the evening’s plot. Audience members who find themselves particularly struck by the improv scene may be invited to step on stage for a supporting role. Some actors (Alex Gavlick, Annie Rimmer) are stronger than others, but the frenzied format is forgiving and fun for all parties involved.
