“Getting Out of Your Own Way”- Curious Comedy Theater presents a very special improv comedy acting workshop with Asaf Ronen on 2/18/13

There are a hundred things that you end up doing on stage instead of what you want to be doing. Your brain is clouded with all sorts of things that you think you are supposed to do instead of what you are inspired to do. Learn to throw all conventions to the wind and just have fun in your scene work. Attend this workshop and let Asaf Ronen teach you how to pull from all your learning and find the school of thought that works for you!

Asaf Ronen

Asaf Ronen is the Educational Director at the Institution Theater in Austin and the author of Directing Improv. Asaf has been involved in improv since 1990, starting in college and working with Theatresports, ComedySportz and directing his own long-form improv troupe, Hiatus, where he helped create original formats.

Asaf has taught improvisation in Canada, Great Britain, Norway and in twenty-two of The United States. His directing credits include the all-girl group GOGA, the improvised comic book adventure show Ka-Baam!!, and Death in the City, a dramatic long-form improv piece, at the NY Fringe Festival. He was a producer on Trust Us, This Is All Made Up, a documentary on legendary improvisers TJ & Dave that had its world premiere at Austin’s South by Southwest Festival and was a writer on the soon-to-be-released Days of Delusion.
Asaf has taught throughout NYC’s public school system as a resident artist through LEAP and New Horizons and as part of Weist-Barron’s ACTeen. In 2000, Asaf worked with Cirque du Soleil as a scout for improvisational talent.

Every time I leave the Northwest, I tell people I am from Portland. They say “oh cool!” as if they are listening. Then, only moments later, the same person will ask me how I like living in Seattle. Though the TV show Portlandia has recently given us something to talk about other than how Portland actually, in fact, is not Seattle, still, the rivalry between the cities continues.

And it’s a beautiful rivalry. One that means something only to us. Seattle brought the world Jimmy Hendrix, Nirvana (and grunge in general), and Microsoft. Meanwhile, Portland doesn’t need to keep singing the praises of a few people who crossed over to the rest of the world – Portland’s indie music/film/comedy scene, it’s strip clubs (Courtney Love first danced at Mary’s), it’s amazing food and progressive lifestyle are for our own sake, man. We don’t have to prove nothing to no one.

Except this Friday. Because this Friday, Instant Comedy continues with a battle to end all battles – an epic improvised comedy competition featuring four of Seattle’s best comic versus four of Portland’s best comics. Who will be the masters of the art form? Who will prevail? Who will show the entire world – nay, the universe – whether Portland or Seattle is the superior city after all?

You will have to come see to find out! And since your votes decide on the winner…like everything else in Portland, your voice will be heard!

Love,
Stacey

Dave Hill seems to be everywhere these days. His new (and first!) book, a collection of essays entitled, Tasteful Nudes, is now on sale, and he has written for publications such as The Huffington Post, The New York Times and The New York Daily News. He’s not just a skilled writer though, oh no, he’s a pretty fantastic comedian as well. He is a regular contributor to public radio’s This American Life and starred in his own TV series, The King of Miami. He has also appeared on Comedy Central, BBC America, MTV, and Adult Swim and is a regular host on HBO and Cinemax. Dave stages his own chat variety show, The Dave Hill Explosion, at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatres in New York, Los Angeles and London. So, basically he’s kind of a big deal. Plus The Huffington Post named him as one of the 50 funniest people to follow on twitter and The Wall Street Journal says that “he is at the vanguard of a new class of entertainers.” If those aren’t endorsements for his awesomeness, I’m not sure what is. But you guys should seriously come see him. He will be at Curious Comedy next Saturday, July 28 at 10pm, immediately following The Curious Comedy Cover Show. Tickets are only $5!
