A Little about Us from Kathryn Durkin

Friends, Foes, Family and Felons:

Curious Comedy Productions is proud to announce the official construction kick off at 5225 NE MLK, and equally excited to let you know that our fundraising campaign is also starting!

After an ambitious first season, Curious Comedy is turning it up a notch with the opening of the Curious Comedy Theater scheduled for October.  The 2007-2008 season kicked off with a well received kids’ show, Sometimes Toilet Water, A Show Written Mostly by Kids and Performed Mostly by Adults.  Following STW was the Neutrino Project: Portland’s Instant Movie Project which ran for two runs at the Hollywood Theater.  Throughout the season, Curious Comedy’s first house ensemble, Swingers, performed several long-form runs at various venues throughout the Portland area. Curious Comedy is still rounding out the end of the season with the Portland Comedy Co-op, a rotating cast of improvisers from Portland’s favorite ensembles, at the Theatre! Theatre! building.  Not to mention a teen class and summer camp, an adult class and the kick-off of our volunteer programs at the Boys’ and Girls Clubs of Portland.

If that seems like a big year, let’s take a look at the upcoming 2008-2009 season: a mainstage sketch show, a fully improvised musical, a kids show (featuring stories written by kids of the Boys and Girls Clubs), a whirl-wind show featuring 30 mini-plays in 60 minutes, more Neutrino Project, one improv and sketch ensemble made up of kids, one made up of teenagers, one of seniors, and FOUR house ensembles…and all of it will be happening in one place: the brand-new CuriousComedy Theater in the Vanport Square building on NE MLK Blvd!

Curious Comedy plans to offer a lot to the Portland community. With in-school programs and partnerships with Sun Schools and Boys & Girls Clubs, we plan to use improv to teach vital skills such as literacy, communication, and teamwork, as well as build self-esteem focusing on at-risk youth and the North and Northeast Portland communities in particular. We also plan to perform in retirement homes and do workshops with seniors. And we hope our lively and positive presence on MLK will contribute to the city’s goal of creating the most vibrant MLK in the country.

While we plan to give a lot to the community, we are also dependent on the support of the community.  The only way to ensure the success of the inaugural season of the Curious Comedy  Theater is through the support of individuals like you.  There is an ambitious year ahead of us here at Curious, and we hope you’ll consider supporting.  To truly kick off our on-going fundraising campaign, we’re running full speed into August with a massive challenge: 31 days to $30,000! Over the month of August, we hope to aggressively raise the funds needed to finish our build-out and ensure the start of a wonderful season.  It’s an ambitious goal — but what is theatre if not ambitious?
